Narrative continues

On Sunday 29th January, I studied narrative continued from the last week. So, today was makeup class because of the Monday 13th was a holiday.

The professor came to the class and start the lesson today with explanation the story “the secrets”. Then she read the part one finished she told me to make a group for four people to complete the summary of the first part of the story. And then, she told us to choose the represents of each group to read the sum-up in front of the classroom. So, I was a represent of my group. 

Next, the professor read and explained the story in the second part. After she read it finished, she told us to do the activity “C” that was “Put the sentences in the right order to produce a summary of the second part of the story.  After that I did the exercise in the handout.

Finally, we opened page13 ‘the diagram’ that we had ever done it since the first time that we learned this lessons. So, we crossed it again and we did it follow the story.

"Recount continues" and "Narrative"

On Monday 23th January, I studied recount continues and narrative. So, I learned 2 Chapters today. When the time was appropriate to study, the professor checked our names and let me discussed with my friend about “what did I do on weekend” After the students shared the experiences finished, she gave me the corrective feedback in the handout that she assigned it last week.

She told us to make a group and summarize the text on the handout. After we summarized finished, the represent of each group told the story that they summarized in front of the class.

Next, the teacher gave me the handout that was “Chapter 2: Narrative”. The professor didn’t explained about this lesson but she started with let me read the text inside. The text was the story about Kylie.  And then the professor asked in the class “What’s about this story?” so many ideas from the students. For instance: the good story of the childhood, the behavior when he or she was young, and the bad story of the childhood, etc. Then, she told me to read the story in the first paragraph and she asked “What is happened in the story”. And she chose someone to tell that.

 Finally, the time was up. Therefore, the teacher assigned us to read the stories part 1 and part 2 for homework.

Recount

On Monday 16^th January, I was study recount but today has something wrong about air conditioning. It didn’t work. Therefore, I must study in the bad environment.

After the professor came to the class and checked members, she gave me a handout about the recount.  It had three topics 'Text organization, News's title, and Language features'. She explained the text was the structure of the text and let me to analyze the relation of the text organization, story, and language features.  And then, she told us to do the exercise 1 that was about analyzing the text. So, it was the personal recount. After I did it finished, the maid of the HS building came to our class and interrupted while the professor was teaching us that “you must turn off the light bulbs and all electrical appliances”. Thus, I couldn’t study.

Suddenly, the maid came to class again and told me that I can use all electrical appliances include air conditioner. After that, the teacher explained us about the recount. And then, she told me to find “what is the Toraja”. While I were finding the Toraja, she opened the Toraja on a website. The pictures in this ceremony were very horrible. Then, she told me to read the text in exercise 2 that was “My Grandpa’s Funeral in Toraja”.

Finally, the time was up. She told me to do another exercise for the homework and she told me to write the recount about the past experience that was interesting onto my weblog.

Course introduction

The first day of the second semester in 2016 is on Monday January 9th. After the professor Usa came to the class and checked the member, she asked ‘‘What is the discourse marker?'. And then, she told me how to speak with my friend about “what did I do on the last vacation?” I can't write anything prepared before discussing with my friend. I told my friend about my last vacation that I didn't go to anywhere, I just stayed at home alone and someday my parents take me to visit my grandparent.

After that, the professor Usa gave me the handout and the course outline. On the handout had three works. She assigned me to match the following words with the correct genres of text.

-  Cause/Effect

-  Definition

-  Problem solving

-  Procedure

-  Classification

-  Comparison and Contrast

The teacher searched the words that we couldn’t pronounce such as:

=> Polygyny (n.)  = the practice of having more than one wife or permanent female sexual partner at the same time

=>Pharmacological (adj.) = relating to treatment that uses drugs

  => Cardiovascular (adj.) = relating to the heart and blood vessels (= tubes that carry blood around the body)

=> Respiratory (adj.) = relating to breathing

=> Category (n.) = (in a system for dividing things according to appearance, quality, etc.) a type, or a group of things having some features that are the same

=> Classification (n.) = the act or process of dividing things into groups according to their type

=> Procedure (n.) = a set of actions that is the official or accepted way of doing something

[Week 15] Learning reflection

This is the last blog for this semester, English strategies course. I had gotten a lot of strategies for reading in my daily life four months ago. I learned English Reading Strategies subject. I learned about a healthy diet, news stories, today's technology, fashion, west meets east, scanning, extensive reading, read faster, paragraph reading strategies and classic Ann Landers.

I thought scanning, extensive reading, read faster and paragraph reading strategies were difficult and I did not understand some content. But I solve my problems by do exercises myself. I need more practice reading .Sometimes I asked my friends and found the some vocabulary before class. Sometimes, I felt bad that I can't did exercise and not understand it, but I tried to practice and asked my friends about each problem.

[Week 14] Classic Ann Landers

On Monday 14th November, I learned about “Classic Ann Landers” . First, the teacher gave me the handout. Next, she assigned us to read letters that someone sent to Ann Landers. While I were reading, the teacher opened the Cambridge dictionary to find some words for teaching me about pronunciation and meaning of its.

Next, I read each letter and its response again and answered the questions. After I did finish, she gave corrective feedback together.

    1. Why did Careful Louisiana write the letter to Ann Landers?

      To ask her to warn the readers to be cautious anytime a stranger has been in their homes.

    2. What is Ann Landers’ advice?

       She advises the writer to lock the doors and windows.

    3. What is Granada Hills’ problem?

       He doesn’t want his friends to say “Get well soon” to her wife. It hurt  to hear that  words because everyone knows his wife will die.

    4. Why did he write the letter to Ann Landers?

     Because he wants to Ann Landers help him for this problem.

    5. What is Ann Landers’ advice for him?

      She has no idea. But she advises him to “Play the game” because the phrase is intended to be comforting.

    6. What is Annoyed in Texas’ problem?

       Her problem is her ex-husband’s new wife is constantly overstepping her bounds  with her children so she feels angry about this .

    7. Why did she write the letter to Ann Landers?

        Because, she needs the advice to deal with her problem.

    8. What is Ann Landers’ advice for her?

       She advises her to don’t complete with the second wife, stay in the background, and refrain from making any critical remarks.  

I used reading faster, scanning, skimming, and reading for detail.

I felt very nervous for the test2.

[Week 13] Paragraph reading strategies

     Last Monday 7th November, I learned the paragraph reading strategies "books and novels". The teacher gave us the handout and assigned us to do exercise 2 that read the questions and then skim the descriptions for the answer. I did it quickly. And then, she gave corrective feedback.

  I used the skimming, scanning, and reading faster for read eight short describe.I usually read every word.I think, I found the obstacles for read faster. I felt happy for this lesson.I can’t answer the question correctly but I will try my best.
